Whole grains help seniors avoid diabetes, heart
disease
Researchers find lower blood sugar and obesity rates among
older adults who eat more wholegrain foods Older adults who
opt for wholegrain foods over refined grains such as those
found in white bread are less likely to develop diabetes
and heart disease, according to a U.S. study.
Between 1981 and 1984, researchers at the University of
Maryland in College Park, Md., had 535 healthy adults ages
60 to 98 years keep a daily food diary. Over the next 10
years, participants who ate more whole grains were less
likely to die from heart disease and less likely to develop
a cluster of diabetes and heart disease risk factors called
the metabolic syndrome. The results held true regardless of
other dietary, lifestyle or demographic risk factors.
The more whole grains participants ate, the lower their
blood sugar and body mass index, a measure of obesity.
Higher intake of refined grains was associated with higher
blood sugar and greater likelihood of developing the
metabolic syndrome.
Despite the fact the original data were collected more than
20 years ago, intake of wholegrain foods has not
substantially changed in North America, with the average
person reportedly consuming, on average, one serving of
whole grains per day.
